TYPICAL USAGE
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissues infections, urogenital infections.
SIDE EFFECTS
Pseudomembranous colitis, jaundice, maculopapular rash, cholestasis, anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, flatulence, dizziness, vertigo, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
DRUG INTERACTION
Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium salts reduce rate of absorption. Increased risk of ergot toxicity. Increased serum concentrations of digoxin and ciclosporin.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Azithromycin binds to the 50S subunit of the 70S bacterial ribosomes, and therefore inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis in bacterial cells.
